DANISH MUSIC AWARDS
FOLK 2006
Saturday 11th Marts 2006 in Tønder
Nominated as:
- - The SINGER of the Year
Traditional Irish
songs with a touch of Scandinavian feeling.
- A new and young remarkably singer makes her entry.
Sussie Nielsen was
born in Copenhagen in 1975. In her early teenage years, Sussie became
a fan of the music of Clannad. Caused by her awakening interest, she went
to Ireland and brought home a heap of music.
Irish music and song came naturally to her and awakened a desire to focus
on the tradition. In 2000, Sussie formed Flax in Bloom, with Tim Goddard
(flute), Ditte Fromseier Mortensen (fiddle), Rasmus Zeeberg (guitar) and
Sonnich Lydom (accordion and mouth organ).
A steadily growing interest in the music, including sean-nós (old
style) singing and Gaelic song, led Sussie back to Ireland. In 2002, she
started at the Irish World Music Centre, University of Limerick, where
she took an M.A. in Irish Traditional Music Performance under the direction
of Professor Michéal Ó Súilleabhain. Her teachers
included many fine singers, among these being Padraigín Ní
Uallacháin, Iarla Ó Lionáird, Karan Casey and Len
Graham. As part of her final exam, Sussie recorded the cd After Rain.
The album was subsequently released in Denmark, where it received excellent
reviews and a nomination for Folk Debut of the Year at the Danish Music
Awards 2004.
Now she has recorded
the follow up CD.
